The MMC Cancer Institute is Maine’s leading provider of oncology services for adults and children, offering a depth and breadth of clinical quality and expertise that is unrivaled in northern New England. From prevention and early detection to state-of-the-art treatment and clinical trials, as well as educational and emotional support, the MMC Cancer Institute is home to the most comprehensive array of award-winning cancer care resources in the region.

MMCCI is a collaboration between Maine Medical Center physicians and private medical groups to provide a broad array of inpatient and outpatient oncology services. Many of our outpatient programs are offered at our Scarborough campus, conveniently located off of Route 1. Inpatient services are offered at either Gibson Pavilion, a dedicated oncology tower at MMC’s main campus in Portland, or at one of the medical or surgical specialty units at the medical center. Our oncology physician experts are located in a variety of medical practices throughout the greater Portland area.

Patient Navigation Services

At no cost to patients, specially trained nurses provide clinical guidance to help patients understand their diagnosis and treatment options and facilitate the decision-making process about which treatment to undergo. In addition, an American Cancer Society Patient Navigator is available – also at no charge – to help patients navigate the myriad community support resources available to them.

The MMCCI Breast Care Center is a state-of-the-art, full-service facility, providing comprehensive breast health care. The Breast Care Center provides screening, early detection, diagnostic imaging services, specialist consultation for benign breast conditions, and treatment of breast cancer in a warm, welcoming and patient-family centered environment.

Thoracic (Lung) Oncology Center

The Thoracic Oncology Center at MMCCI was created to meet the unique needs of people with tumors arising in the thorax. The most common cancer of this type is lung cancer, for which we provide a comprehensive range of diagnostic and treatment resources in a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic setting.

Cancer Risk and Prevention Clinic

The Cancer Risk and Prevention Clinic helps individuals and their families address concerns about hereditary cancer risk by providing cancer genetic risk assessment and counseling services.

Radiation Oncology

The MMC Cancer Institute’s Radiation Oncology Department meets stringent national standards for quality, safety and technical excellence – earning it accreditation from the American College of Radiology (ACR). Patients have access to a comprehensive array of the most advanced radiation therapy modalities and the expertise of our team of six board-certified radiation oncologists.

Outpatient Intravenous (IV) Therapy

Patients diagnosed with cancer that are undergoing intravenous (IV) chemotherapy and/or supportive therapy have a state-of-the-art facility designed for their comfort at MMCCI’s Outpatient IV Therapy program.

Maine Center for Cancer Medicine (MCCM)

MCCM is the largest private oncology practice in northern New England, with 14 board-certified, fellowship-trained medical oncologists and hematologists as well as seven highly experienced nurse practitioners.

Maine Medical Partners – Gynecologic Oncology

The four board-certified or board-eligible gynecologic oncologists who are part of Maine Medical Partners - Women’s Health and Gynecologic Oncology are uniquely qualified to diagnose, stage and direct the treatment of patients with gynecologic cancers.

Inpatient Cancer Care

When adult patients with cancer require hospitalization, exceptionally compassionate, high-quality care is provided at the Marshall L. and Susan Gibson Pavilion at Maine Medical Center, the only dedicated inpatient oncology unit of its size in Maine. Patients with cancer are also hospitalized at several surgical and medical specialty units at the medical center.

The MMC Center for Pain and Palliative Care (Inpatient)

The Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute collaborates closely with the MMC Center for Pain and Palliative Care. The Center works with adult inpatients, referred by their attending physician, to help relieve the burdensome physical, emotional and psychosocial symptoms from which patients with advanced or chronic disease often suffer.

Surgical Oncology

Surgical oncology focuses on the surgical management of cancer. The MMCCI’s surgeons perform all of the most advanced surgical procedures involved in diagnosing and treating cancer. These include breast cancer, melanoma, digestive tract and abdominal cancer.
